The papery flower heads of Common Hop Humulus lupulus, have been used to flavour beer since the middle ages. They have sedative properties, and are also used to stuff pillows to aid relaxation and sleep. The young shoots of the plant are said to taste of asparagus, and can be eaten raw or cooked.
